A 3 MOA dot is the most common choice for good reason. Bigger than a 2 MOA for faster pickup under stress, small enough for accurate work at any realistic defensive distance.
Because it sits in the dovetail, the dot lines up almost exactly where your rear sight was. That means the presentation you already have still finds the dot, which is the usual struggle when shooters move from irons to an optic.
