Scope bases mount directly to the receiver and set the platform everything else references. Fitment is the whole question: the right base for your exact action, or none of it works.
Sized for a 1-inch tube, the traditional American standard still used across most hunting scopes. High rings give clearance for large objective bells, 50mm and up, or for a rifle with a tall comb. The trade is a higher sight line over the bore. Steel construction adds weight but resists deformation under clamping force better than aluminum, which is why it stays popular on hard-kicking rifles.
