A one-piece mount replaces the separate base-and-ring stack with a single machined unit. Fewer joints means fewer places for the system to shift, which is why precision and duty shooters keep moving this direction.
It clamps to a Picatinny rail, the MIL-STD-1913 slot pattern used on virtually every modern rifle, so mounting position is adjustable along the rail. Steel construction adds weight but resists deformation under clamping force better than aluminum, which is why it stays popular on hard-kicking rifles.
