Need Help Getting a Firearm Back from Police in San Diego?

If your firearm was taken by law enforcement, placed into evidence, held for safekeeping, recovered after being stolen, or otherwise impounded by a police department or sheriff’s department, getting it back can be confusing. In many cases, the agency will not simply hand the firearm back without the proper California DOJ firearm release paperwork, agency approval, and appointment process.

WBT Guns helps make that process easier by working as your local San Diego FFL resource for police firearm pickup, sheriff department firearm release, seized gun transfer, firearm storage, and compliant firearm handling.

COST: Starting at $100

Our Firearm Pickup Service Can Help With

  • Firearms held by local police property and evidence units
  • Firearms held by sheriff stations or sheriff property/evidence departments
  • Firearms released after a criminal case, restraining order issue, safekeeping hold, or investigation
  • Recovered stolen firearms that need to be released to the lawful owner
  • Firearms that need to be transferred, stored, sold, or shipped through a licensed FFL
  • Customers who do not want to personally pick up the firearm, when agency policy allows FFL release
  • Firearms that may need California compliance review before possession or transfer

How the California Law Enforcement Gun Release Process Works

The basic process usually looks like this:

  1. Contact the law enforcement agency that has the firearm and confirm whether it is eligible to be released.
  2. Gather your case number, incident number, property receipt, and firearm details such as make, model, caliber, and serial number if available.
  3. Sign The Department release form, granting WBT permission to retrieve the firearm on your behalf

When your firearm is approved for release and the agency allows release to an FFL or authorized party, WBT Guns will retrieve your firearm(s).

Once WBT has your gun, we can do 1 of the following:

Return the firearm to you following the standard DROS proceess.

Transfer the firearm to your designated person via the DROS process.

Send the firearm to another FFL for transfer to another person who may live outside the San Diego area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I do not want the firearm back personally?

Depending on the firearm, your ownership status, and the agency’s rules, you may have options to transfer, sell, consign, store, or ship the firearm through an FFL. Contact us before your release deadline expires.

Can WBT Guns help if the firearm is not California compliant?

WBT Guns specializes in California-compliant firearms. If the firearm can legally be handled, transferred, modified, or shipped, we can review possible options. Some firearms may not be transferable or returnable depending on California law, agency policy, or the facts of the case.
